Our Mission
Worthy Women Recovery Home is a Christian home that provides recently incarcerated and/or at-risk women with re-entry programs and the tools necessary to reduce recidivism rates and substance abuse addiction, while empowering them to be positive role models for their children and communities.

Our Beginning
Worthy Recovery Inc.(WRI) Executive Director and founder, Sonshine Troche, began facilitating the Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT®) Cognitive Behavioral Program in the La Porte County Jail, in February 2008, along with a faith-based Character Study. She soon witnessed female inmates returning to the jail over and over again. When she asked, "Why do you keep being rearrested?" the answer was always the same, "I have nowhere safe to go. I can't get a job. I dropped out of high school." Many questions and research later, one thing was clear to Sonshine; La Porte County did not have any Recovery Homes or substance abuse rehabilitation programs.

On September 22, 2008, thirteen community members united at the Bob Evans Restaurant in Michigan City, Indiana to start the first substance abuse recovery home for local former female inmates in La Porte County. Worthy Women Recovery Home was birthed.

On November 5, 2008, Worthy Recovery(WRI) received incorporation status. With research, tenacity, and generous friends, just enough money was raised to fill out the forms ourselves and pay an Attorney to review our efforts. On January 22, 2009 we filed for our 501c3 tax-exempt status. On March 5, 2009 six weeks later, we received our 501c3 tax-exempt status. Two months later, one of the first ladies Sonshine helped, passed away after 10 days in a coma from a heroin overdose; a painful reminder that we could not build the recovery home fast enough.

Our home under construction Our home under construction
WRI purchased an uninhabitable building, debt-free on September 7, 2011 in La Porte, IN with almost 4800 square feet of room. EVERYTHING had to be torn off and out and replaced, beginning with the roof and windows. The only original part of the building left included the roof and floor joists, and the brick that made up the exterior and demising/structural walls. We were within 6 weeks of our anticipated opening, when we had a very expensive and accidental fire on November 24, 2015. Damage to the main floor was extensive, however, God protected our home and blessed us with 54 more volunteers, so that we completed the remaining construction and the fire restoration 7 months later. Many heartfelt thanks to 504 community members and volunteers, because IT IS FINISHED, WE ARE OPEN! Now the real work begins, and we need you.

The Goal
Too many of the ladies in the La Porte County Jail are trapped in the recidivism (rearrest) cycle. They are released from the jail broken, desperate and depressed. They have nowhere to go but back to the same environment that contributed to their incarceration. Many women return to jail, sometimes a week after release. They need healing, to learn structure and to learn recovery and redemption.

The primary mission of Worthy Women Recovery Home is a safe, sober residential living environment, giving former female inmates hope for a future while teaching them to use the tools needed to become self-sufficient, positive, sober, recovered, value driven members of society. Fostering appropriate interaction with their children and families will be our secondary focus. Promoting other appropriate, healthy and positive relationships will also be a foundational part of their learning.

Our goal for each of one of our residents is salvation, sobriety and long-term life skills.

"These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed." 1 Peter 1:7
Addiction affects everyone of us, especially the suffering children of our Ladies, who are too young to understand why Mommy can't come home, why Mommy is behind the glass, why Mommy stays so far away, etc. The children of these mothers rarely have a chance to enjoy a normal childhood, being shuffled from one living environment to another, often being sexually or physically abused themselves, being bullied and ridiculed because of their family situations. Discouraged, then isolating, falling into deep depression, they more often than not, are trapped into substance abuse addiction just like their mothers. The money we as a country spend on social services, counseling, programming, rehabilitation centers, etc. won't last forever; the need for these services will, unless we intervene and reduce this vicious cycle.

Please partner with WORTHY Women Recovery Home to slow the cycle of recidivism by making a financial donation or volunteering today.
